Contraception is the term that describes various methods that can help you avoid unplanned pregnancies. One contraceptive
method, the condom, helps you avoid most sexually transmitted infections (STIs/STDs), but most contraceptive methods
don’t.
Contraceptive methods can be broken down into two groups: ongoing contraceptive methods and emergency contraceptive
methods. Ongoing contraceptive methods are ones that you can use regularly as a way to manage your reproductive health.
Emergency contraceptive methods should be used as the name suggests – only in those emergencies when you’ve forgotten to
use ongoing contraception or you’re worried that your choice of contraception failed.
To help you make an informed decision about how to manage your reproductive health, we’ve put together information about
contraceptive methods. This information should act as a starting point to help you decide what’s best for you, but we’d
encourage you to get advice from a doctor or nurse before deciding which method is the one for you.
