HIV test - what is an HIV home test?
The DrThom HIV test is just like a normal HIV test apart from the fact that you don't need to go to a clinic to have your blood taken, but collect a saliva sample at home. You then send the saliva sample direct to the laboratory where your saliva sample is tested.
HIV test - how does the process work?
Register online, make payment, wait for the discreet HIV test pack to arrive, collect your saliva sample and send it off to the laboratory in the packaging provided. We'll get back to your with your result.
HIV test - what does the result from this test mean?
When we give you your results, we will tell you that the HIV test was either 'negative' or 'reactive'. 'Negative' means that the test could not find any evidence of HIV infection. 'Reactive' means that the test could not rule out HIV infection. 'Reactive' is therefore not the same as a HIV 'positive' result. Indeed, most patients with a 'reactive' result will be HIV 'negative'. The key thing about receiving a 'reactive' result is that it means you must go to a clinic for an HIV blood test. We will advise you of this if and when we telephone you to tell you that your result is 'reactive'.
HIV test - how will I get my test result?
When your HIV test result is ready, we'll send you an SMS (text message) or email telling you to log back into your online patient record to collect your result. If your HIV test result is 'reactive' or there were technical problems at the laboratory, we'll ask you to give us a telephone number to call you on.
HIV test - how long do results normally take?
Most HIV results are ready within three days of your sample reaching the laboratory.
HIV test - how accurate is this test?
This test is very accurate, but not as accurate as an HIV blood test. A greater proportion of patients will get a 'reactive' result with this saliva test as compared to an HIV blood test. Please contact us via your online patient record if you want specific details about the accuracy of this HIV test.
HIV test - when will you send me my test pack?
Order before 5:00pm Monday to Friday and your pack will be in that day's first class post.
HIV test - is this service appropriate for me?
This HIV test is right for you if you consider yourself able to cope with being told, over the telephone, that the HIV test is 'reactive', that HIV could not be ruled out, and that you need a follow-up blood test at a clinic.
HIV test - is this service confidential?
Absolutely. This service is totally confidential. We aren't allowed to inform your GP of the result without your permission.
HIV test - how long should I wait before taking this test?
You must wait three and a half months after possible infection before using this HIV test. This HIV test is unlikely to pick up signs of HIV infection in the first three and a half months after infection.
