Who is this premium contraceptive service aimed at?
This premium contraceptive service is only for women with a UK delivery address, who are aged 18 and over, and who are
already using Nuvaring or Yaz. Through this service you can request a further three month course. For all other oral
contraceptives please use our
standard oral contraceptive service.
How does this online service work?
Simply complete our online questionnare, tell us the contraceptive you are currently taking or have recently stopped
taking, then make payment using a debit or credit card in your name. Our doctors will assess the answers you give and, if
appropriate, prescribe and post you the medicine that you have requested.
How are the medicines dispatched?
Medicines are dispatched in discreet packaging using Royal Mail Special Delivery. The outside of the packaging will not
say what is inside.
Will someone have to sign for the medicine upon delivery?
Yes. Someone will have to sign for the medicine upon delivery, but it does not have to be you.
How effective is the contraceptive?
If you take the contraceptive as instructed, it's over 99% effective. This means that if a hundred sexually active women
who are otherwise healthy take the pill as instructed for a year, only one of them will fall pregnant.
What other contraceptive options are there, apart from the pills and rings?
There are many contraceptive options available to women in the UK. Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) - such as
the coil or patch - tends to be the most effective. Owing to the remote nature of this service we can only provide a routine
contraceptive and the
morning-after
pill in advance of need. For information on the other options available please visit the bpas website website at
www.bpas.org.uk. bpas was previously known as the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.
What are the potential side-effects of using a hormonal contraceptive?
You need to know about the possible side-effects of hormonal contraceptives before you can make an informed decision as
to whether this service is right for you. Like any medicine, hormonal contraceptives can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or
an allergic rash. In addition a hormonal contraceptive can - albeit rarely - cause blood clots in the legs or lungs, raised
blood pressure and it can increase your risk of breast cancer. For a full list of some of the rarer side-effects, please
consult the leaflet that accompanies the medicine.
Who should not use our contraceptive service?
You should not use this service if you have been told in the past that you should not take a hormonal contraceptive.
This medicine should also not be taken by pregnant women. You must not use this service if you have never taken a hormonal
contraceptive before. You must not use this service if you are under 18. You should not use this service if you or someone
else will not be able to sign for the medicine upon delivery.
Do you offer ongoing prescriptions?
Yes. We can offer ongoing prescriptions. After the initial three month course, you can request a further prescription
but you must have your blood pressure checked in the interim. This is to ensure that the medicine hasn't raised your blood
pressure. Most pharmacies can check your blood pressure for free with no questions asked. You don't have to visit your
doctor. Depending on your circumstances you may be offered the option of purchasing a six month prescription of your chosen
contraceptive after you have used this service for the first time.
