What are the benefits of this service?
This service is overseen by Dr Thom Van Every and helps you obtain a further three month prescription of the same
contraceptive pill you are already taking without having to go to the doctor. Cilest, Microgynon, Yasmin and other common UK
licensed contraceptive pills are available.
Who is this contraceptive service aimed at?
This service is only for women with a UK delivery address, who are aged 18 and over , and who are currently using or
have recently used the routine contraceptive pill.
How does this online service work?
Complete our online questionnare and then make payment using a valid debit or credit card. Our doctors will assess the
answers you give and, if appropriate, prescribe and post you the pill that you have requested.
What if DrThom thinks I need to see a doctor face to face?
We will offer a full refund if our doctors think it is not appropriate for you to receive treatment without a face to
face consultation.
Will someone need to sign for the medicines upon delivery?
Yes, someone will need to sign for the medicines upon delivery. Medicines are sent out using Royal Mail Special
Delivery.
What if I'd rather collect my medicine from a pharmacy?
If you'd rather collect any medicines you order from a Lloydspharmacy, please use the DrThom service available through
the
Lloydspharmacy onlinedoctor website. There are
currently 390 Lloydspharmacy stores where you can collect orders that you have placed online from the Lloydspharmacy online
doctor website. Your DrThom username and password will work on the Lloydspharmacy website but you need to click on the
onlinedoctor tab before attempting to login.
Can DrThom prescribe the combined pill and the mini pill?
Our doctors can prescribe both the combined pill and the mini-pill.
How will DrThom know which contraceptive pill I want?
When you complete our short health questionnaire, we will ask you to tell us the name of the contraceptive pill you have
been using. Our doctors can only prescribe the contraceptive pill that you have been taking most recently.
The pill I want isn't listed - what should I do?
When you answer the questionnaire below, if you don't see the pill that you are currently taking, simply let us know via
your online patient record and we may be able to help.
Does DrThom offer ongoing prescriptions for the pill?
Yes. We can offer ongoing prescriptions. After the initial three month course, you can request a further prescription
but you must have your blood pressure checked in the interim. This is to ensure that the medicine hasn't raised your blood
pressure. Most pharmacies can check your blood pressure for free with no questions asked. You don't have to visit your
doctor.
How effective is the pill?
If you take the contraceptive pill as instructed, it's over 99% effective. This means that if a hundred sexually active
women who are otherwise healthy take the pill as instructed for a year, only one of them will fall pregnant.
What other contraceptive options are there, apart from the pill?
There are many contraceptive options available to women in the UK. Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) - such as
the coil or patch - tends to be the most effective. Owing to the remote nature of this service we can only provide the
routine contraceptive pill and the
morning-after
pill in advance of need. For information on the other options available please visit the bpas website website at
www.bpas.org.uk. bpas was previously known as the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.
What are the potential side-effects of using the pill?
You need to know about the possible side-effects of the pill before you can make an informed decision as to whether this
service is right for you. Like any medicine, the contraceptive pill can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or an allergic
rash. In addition the contraceptive pill can - albeit rarely - cause blood clots in the legs or lungs, raised blood pressure
and it can increase your risk of breast cancer. For a full list of some of the rarer side-effects, please consult the leaflet
that accompanies the medicine.
Who should not use our contraceptive service?
You should not use this service if you have been told in the past that you should not take the contraceptive pill. This
medicine should also not be taken by pregnant women. You must not use this service if you have never taken the pill before.
You must not use this service if you are under 18. You should not use this service if you or someone else will not be able to
sign for the medicine upon delivery.
