Who is this contraceptive service aimed at?
This contraceptive service is only for women with a UK delivery address, who are aged 18 and over , and who are
currently using or have recently used the routine contraceptive pill. We provide a convenient way for you to get a further
three month course of the same contraceptive pill that you are already using or have used before.
Owing to a request from the Irish Medicines Board, we are currently unable to send the pill direct to women in the Republic
of Ireland.
How does this online service work?
Simply complete our online questionnare and then make payment using a card in your name. Our doctors will assess the
answers you give and, if appropriate, prescribe and post you the pill that you have requested. Our doctors will prescribe a
three month course of treatment. You will need to sign for the medicine upon delivery. If our doctors don't think it's in
your interests to send you the pill, we'll give you a full refund.
Can I make payment with a debit or credit card in someone else's name?
No. If the name on the card is not the same as your name, we will not prescribe treatment and will make an immediate
refund.
Can our doctors prescribe the combined pill and the mini pill?
Our doctors can prescribe both the combined pill and the mini-pill.
How will we know which contraceptive pill you want?
When you complete our short health questionnaire, we will ask you to tell us the name of the contraceptive pill you have
been using. We will provide a list of most of the contraceptive pills available in the UK. We can prescribe all combined and
mini-pills that are commonly used in the UK with the exception of Dianette. We can not prescribe Dianette at the moment but
hope to do so in the near future. We also can not prescribe contraceptive pills that are not licensed in the UK.
The pill I want isn't listed - what should I do?
When you answer the questionnaire below, if you don't see the pill that you are currently taking, simply let us know via
your online patient record and we may be able to help.
When does the pill arrive?
Our doctors will normally prescribe your treatment within one working day of you requesting treatment. We'll then post
the medicine to your delivery address as guaranteed next day delivery if you live in the UK. You will need to sign for the
medicine upon delivery.
How effective is the pill?
If you take the contraceptive pill as instructed, it's over 99% effective. This means that if a hundred sexually active
women who are otherwise healthy take the pill as instructed for a year, only one of them will fall pregnant.
What other contraceptive options are there, apart from the pill?
There are many contraceptive options available to women in the UK. Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) - such as
the coil or patch - tends to be the most effective. Owing to the remote nature of this service we can only provide the
routine contraceptive pill and the
morning-after
pill in advance of need. For information on the other options available please visit the bpas website website at
www.bpas.org.uk. bpas was previously known as the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.
What are the potential side-effects of using the pill?
You need to know about the possible side-effects of the pill before you can make an informed decision as to whether this
service is right for you. Like any medicine, the contraceptive pill can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or an allergic
rash. In addition the contraceptive pill can - albeit rarely - cause blood clots in the legs or lungs, raised blood pressure
and it can increase your risk of breast cancer. For a full list of some of the rarer side-effects, please consult the leaflet
that accompanies the medicine.
Who should not use our contraceptive service?
You should not use this service if you have been told in the past that you should not take the contraceptive pill. This
medicine should also not be taken by pregnant women. You must not use this service if you have never taken the pill before.
You must not use this service if you are under 18. You should not use this service if you or someone else will not be able to
sign for the medicine upon delivery.
Do you offer ongoing prescriptions for the pill?
Yes. We can offer ongoing prescriptions. After the initial three month course, you can request a further prescription
but you must have your blood pressure checked in the interim. This is to ensure that the medicine hasn't raised your blood
pressure. Most pharmacies can check your blood pressure for free with no questions asked. You don't have to visit your
doctor.
